Question 1

How much money do I need to retire in Mexico from Canada?

Accepted Answer

In 2026, Mexico requires a minimum monthly income of approximately $4,300 CAD for Temporary Residency (Rentista) or assets of $430,000+ CAD. Financial requirements vary by consulate and pathway (pension, investment, real estate). CanadiansinMX provides a free eligibility check to determine your specific threshold.

Question 2

Will I lose my provincial health insurance (OHIP/MSP) if I move to Mexico?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most provinces cancel your coverage after 212 days outside Canada per year (for Snowbirds) or upon establishing non-residency. A coverage gap of even 24 hours can result in significant medical costs. CanadiansinMX maps the exact dates and steps to ensure zero coverage gaps during your transition.

Question 3

Do I have to pay taxes in Canada if I retire or winter in Mexico?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your residency status. Snowbirds remain Canadian tax residents and continue paying taxes normally. Those who formally establish non-residency with the CRA stop paying Canadian income tax on worldwide income, but face a 'deemed disposition' (departure tax) in the year they leave. Cross-border tax planning is essential for both paths.

Question 4

How long does it take to get Mexican residency from Canada?

Accepted Answer

The Canadian consulate interview for a Mexican Temporary or Permanent Residency visa typically takes 4-8 weeks to schedule. Once your visa sticker is in your passport, you have 180 days to enter Mexico and complete the canje (exchange) process for your physical residency card, which takes an additional 30-60 days inside Mexico.
